Here's a potentially dumb question that popped into my head - do the Tibetans use the barley or mainly export it? And what is it's main use there - barley flour for baked goods or as an ingredient for alcohol? Thanks ~ an inquiring mind. PS- isn't it lovely when you come across unexpected green spaces!
Heya! As far as I know, the Tibetans use the barley mostly for their own personal use. They grind it into flour and eat it, mostly as dumplings (which, with a little sugar and melted yak butter, are yuuuuummy!). Not sure about the alcohol, although there is a beer called Lhasa Beer that's made there, so I'm sure it's used for that too.
I thought it was cute when I met my guide early one morning, and when I asked him where he was going he said, "To eat some barley flour for breakfast." haha!!
