Today (March 1) was a holiday. I believe it was to celebrate the liberation of Korea from Japan. In any case, I spent the day hiking with friends, seeing the temples, and going to what we call "The Fish Restaurant" (I don't know the actual name...). Here's a pic of the front of it:
It's funny...in Korea, restaurants often feature gigantic pictures outside of the live version of what's on the menu inside. I don't find it that appetizing...especially when you see giant ugly fish gaping down at you, or pigs and cows grazing in meadows. However, I do find that in the West there is a bit of a disconnect between the live version of your food and the meat on your plate. I don't think that disconnect exists here to the same extent...especially since most fish restaurants have big aquariums out front on the sidewalk filled with whatever you are about to eat...live fish, octopuses (I thought it was octopi, but the spell check says octopuses...), and other doomed sea creatures.
Anyway, here we all are:
Eating at a restaurant is really a communal affair, with common plates in the centre from which we all eat. The food was great, and we got piles of it for only about $5 each. The combinations of food here are very different from home. Tonight we ate fish, spaghetti, salad, tomatoes, and french toast. And all with chopsticks! They behave themselves a little better these days than they did a few weeks ago. :P
The restaurant is run by this sweet Korean lady whose English is superb. Unfortunately (for us), she is soon moving to China. Her nephew is the cutest child on the planet. He's so charming and cheery, and has already taught himself many English words. He always comes over and socializes with us while we eat:
And here he is again, enjoying a photo album that was made by the girl on the left for the girl on the right, who is heading back to England next week: :(
A very tasty way to end the holiday! Have a great weekend everyone!! XOXO
